Bigger Lüderitz plan moves closer

The Lüderitz Town Council’s application to incorporate approximately 290 000 hectares into the townlands of Lüderitz has advanced to its final stage, following the award of a procurement contract for the undertaking of the requisite environmental assessment (EIA).

The EIA will assess and identify the potential environmental and social impacts associated with the proposed expansion, including the development of new townships and an industrial node. It will also determine the measures required to prevent, mitigate, or minimise any potential adverse impacts on the environment and surrounding communities.

Council CEO Austin Mubiana and town planning officer Helena Antonius signed a performance contract yesterday with D & P Engineers and Environmental Consultants, represented by its managing director, Timo David. The contract, valued at N$1.8 million, is scheduled to be implemented over a period of 18 months, during which the requisite environmental assessments and related processes will be undertaken.
