48 die in crashes since January

At least 48 people have been killed and 211 injured in 112 truck-related crashes recorded across Namibia betwen January and 16 September, MVA Fund chief corporate affairs John Haufiku said.

Erongo recorded the highest number of crashes at 30 and the most fatalities at 15, while Khomas recorded 21 crashes and the highest number of injuries at 59.

Otjozondjupa recorded 14 crashes, 36 injuries and 14 deaths. Together, Erongo and Otjozondjupa accounted for 29 of the 48 fatalities.

Haufiku said collisions were the most common crash type, accounting for 57 crashes, 157 injuries and 37 deaths.

Pedestrian-related crashes accounted for 24 incidents, 17 injuries and 10 deaths, highlighting the vulnerability of pedestrians in crashes involving heavy vehicles.
