Volleyball
After a tiring competition for every point, the police club's men and women's teams could finally lift the trophy.
The Bank Windhoek Namibia Volleyball Federation (NVF) Cup finals took place at the Windhoek Show grounds on Saturday and spectators were left satisfied with the competitiveness.
It was indeed a good day for volleyball lovers as the Cup finals delivered plenty of excitement.
Defending men’s champions Khomas Nampol Volleyball Club took on Afrocats in a semi-final that was really tight and won the game 3-2, to book themselves a place in the final.
NDF came with positive energy, singing songs and dancing, determined to do well in the tournament. Which they did when they faced Namibia Correctional Service, winning three sets in a row to storm into the final.
In the men’s finale, NDF started well as they took the lead against Khomas Nampol, but the lead didn’t last long as the defending champions bounced back to make the score 2-1. The match was tied at 2-2 and Khomas Nampol showed class to secure the win 3-2 and successfully defend their title as Bank Windhoek Namibia Volleyball Federation (NVF) Cup champions.
Khomas Nampol captain Mensah Kambala said post-match: “I’m so proud of my team. We fought hard, we knew it was going to be a tough game, because we faced them last year and knocked them out of the competition, so we knew they were out to get us.”
Asser Daniel, the NDF captain, was gutted after the final disappointment. “We made too many mistakes and that really cost us the game. For us it’s back to the drawing board now and we’ll come back stronger.”
Namibia Correctional Service claimed the bronze in the men’s competition after they beat Afrocats 3-1.
WOMEN’S KNOCKOUTS
In the women’s cup final, Khomas Nampol reigned supreme as they beat the Namibia Navy club three sets to nil to claim the trophy.
The Navy team had reached the final with a 3-2 elimination of Kudos, while Khomas Nampol won their semi-final 3-1.
Revivals then recovered in the bronze final to beat Kudos three sets to one to secure the third position for the 2023 season.
Nampol’s triumphant captain, Helena Itula, said after a tiring semi-final, it has become important for them to complete the final match against Navy in no more than three sets.
NVF president, Dux Imbuwa, said: “For the past few years we’ve been developing and now we can see that the players are performing exceptionally well.
“”The competition was really tight, the finals showed that volleyball in Namibia is growing really well.”
