This is my national reconciliation day – Hishoono
Humbled Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) Ohangwena regional leader Abed Hishoono, who yesterday received clemency from First Lady Monica Geingos, said he will mark the date as his personal ‘national reconciliation day’.
Bishop, as Hishoono is affectionately known, was sued by Geingos and found guilty of defamatory utterances he made in 2021 against the First Lady. He was set to pay up to N$250 000 for defaming her.
This comes just days after Hishoono was quoted in The Namibian expressing difficulty raising the funds as determined by the Windhoek High Court earlier this year. He has pleaded for help on social media, asking Good Samaritans to donate funds.
Geingos sued Hishoono after a video he made went viral on various social media in which he alleged that the First Lady was responsible for the collapse of Air Namibia because she held shareholding in Westair Aviation. He also claimed Geingos was in a relationship with former Investec managing director James Hatuikulipi, who is currently in jail for his alleged involvement in the Fishrot court case, before her marriage to President Hage Geingob.
When contacted for comment yesterday, Hishoono said he felt very good when he learnt that Geingos has forgiven him.
“It’s a wonderful move indeed,” he said.
‘Motherly love’
“Today, 16 June, is African Child Day. It will go into the history of the country as a very special day in which the First Lady demonstrated her motherly love in forgiving her own son and she mentioned something on reconciliation.
“I will say again that today I will put into my history as national reconciliation day because she not only reconciled with me, but brought reconciliation to people who were supporting me and those who were supporting her.”
In a statement issued by her lawyer Sisa Namandje, Geingos said she was convinced that Hishoono regrets the utterances he made, hence her decision to forgive him.
“Convinced that Mr Hishoono has now honestly, deeply and genuinely indicated that he has wrongfully violated my rights and that of my family, and he acknowledges that he had absolutely no factual basis for the toxic statements he made, I have decided, upon careful consideration, not to enforce and execute the High Court judgment against Mr Hishoono in respect of the amount of N$250 000 that he was ordered to pay as compensation,” the statement read.
Geingos added that she was satisfied Hishoono had accepted accountability for his actions.
