Stop the squabbling, /Goagoses urges
In the wake of regional and local authorities grappling with what some regard as the illegal suspension of accounting officers and infighting amongst office-bearers, urban and rural development deputy minister Natalia /Goagoses has called on the squabbles to stop with immediate effect.
Speaking at an information-sharing session on the appointment and suspension of chief regional officers and the CEO in Rundu recently, she said infighting between politicians and administrative staff should be condemned and professional conduct and debates upheld.
“Infights amongst politicians, unnecessary squabbles and quarrels must stop with immediate effect," she said.
/Goagoses’ sentiments come at a time when some local authorities and regional councils are without substantive accounting officers, and as vacancies remain unfilled due to squabbles.
“It is very worrisome to learn that we have //Karas, Hardap and Omaheke regions operating without substantive chief regional officers. With regard to local authorities, we have Oranjemund and the situation at Grootfontein municipality, among many others,” she said.
Financial implications
Apart from the lack of service delivery to the electorates as a result of political and administrative fights, the situation has also proved to be a costly exercise, as local or regional councils have spent thousands - if not more - to defend these cases in court.
/Goagoses and her delegation, consisting of various stakeholders, are travelling to all 14 regions to educate regional leaders on the policies and processes that are in place for council has to take a decision on either appointing or suspending accounting officers.
“We need to reflect on how we should handle issues of appointments, suspensions and renewal of employment contracts of the accounting officers in accordance with the relevant legislation. “Let’s be cognisant of the root causes of this unfavourable situation and how we can improve it,” /Goagoses urged.
