SPYL cannot suspend me – Swapo ‘swindler’
The Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) is caught between a rock and a hard place over its fraud-accused Kavango West secretary Boniphatius Muronga, who claims the wing cannot suspend him because his matter is before the courts.
Muronga, who faces 16 counts of fraud after he allegedly forged the signature of Swapo secretary-general Sophia Shaningwa and used President Hage Geingob’s name to extort money from his former lover, said he was not given an opportunity to air his side of the story to the SPYL leadership.
“I cannot be judged by the public or through the media. We have courts that can either prove your innocence or guilt. For them to suspend me, what evidence do they have? What have I done wrong?
"Those letters that are circulating, I have no knowledge of their origin, hence I cannot be suspended on that,” he remarked.
He also claimed there is no evidence that suggests that he committed any crime, adding that the ongoing police investigations will exonerate him from the charges he faces.
“The party does not have the legal right to place me on suspension since the matter is before the Rundu Magistrate’s Court,” he said.
He also hinted that because the party is gearing for its elective congress later this year, there is an attempt to “assassinate [his] character”.
Procedures
Muronga was arrested on 12 July after he allegedly swindled the mother of his child out of N$100 000 by using the party’s name and forged signatures. He is currently out on N$8 000 bail and has maintained his innocence since the news broke.
SPYL’s national executive committee resolved to suspend Muronga at a meeting held on 16 July in Ongwediva.
Secretary Ephraim Nekongo said the youth league will pronounce itself on the issue once all party procedures have been followed.
“What I can tell you is that we are following procedures and once we are done with everything, we will inform you about our position on the matter,” he said.
Sources have also hinted that an independent committee will be formed to probe the allegations against Muronga.
