PDM to address food insecurity
News in short
Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) president McHenry Venaani has announced that he will embark on a month-long tour to 100 settlements across Namibia to discuss the country’s high food insecurity figures.
In a statement yesterday, he called on corporate companies to step up and contribute towards the alleviation of hunger.
Venaani said despite being classified as an ‘upper-middle-income country’, 18% of Namibians live below the national poverty line.
"According to the 2022 Global Hunger Index, Namibia suffers from a serious level of hunger, ranking 78th out of 116 countries... The specter of hunger looms over our nation, affecting thousands of our fellow Namibians in a manner that should concern us all," the statement read.
Venaani further called on government to prioritise food assistance and deliver immediate relief to areas most affected by food insecurity and hunger.
"The state must take a central role in ensuring that no Namibian goes to bed hungry," he said.
