Only jobless Namibians eligible for election jobs – ECN

Kenya Kambowe
The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has clarified that only unemployed citizens will be considered for temporary jobs related to the upcoming regional council and local authority elections in November.

This was confirmed by ECN spokesperson De Wet Siluka.

“We only recruit those who are unemployed and when it’s detected that an applicant is employed, they are disqualified," he told Namibian Sun.

Siluka encouraged members of the public to contact the ECN if they are aware of individuals who have been hired for temporary posts while employed elsewhere.

Siluka was responding to questions from Namibian Sun following allegations that civil servants have been observed working for the ECN during previous elections.

With youth unemployment currently estimated at around 44.4%, there have been calls for the ECN and the labour ministry to ensure that only unemployed Namibians are recruited for roles during voter registration and during the election.

Recruit those in need

A source claimed that while “unemployment is a real issue in this country, yet we see institutions such as ECN allowing people to put in leave at their workplaces and go and assist during elections whilst there are thousands of unemployed youth in the country."

“We need the government to really look into this, especially the ministry of labour. They need to compel the ECN to do the right thing and block employed people from getting those jobs," the source said.

"They have salaries already, yet they still want those temporary jobs.”
