Nudo turns 59, bashes Swapo
Urges government to create more jobs
Nudo secretary general Josef Kauandenge said it is unacceptable that so many Namibians still live in shacks.
National Unity Democratic Organisation (Nudo) secretary general Josef Kauandenge used the party's 59th anniversary celebrations last weekend to bash the ruling party for allegedly failing to accord Namibians dignified lives.
Addressing party and community members at Windhoek's Havana informal settlement, one of the poorest areas in the city, he singled out poverty across the country as one of the main indicators of Swapo’s performance over the years.
"As we celebrate our 59th anniversary, we should ask ourselves whether the sacrifices made by our party's founders were worthwhile or whether the current ruling party has betrayed that trust.
“It is sad that in an independent Namibia, we still have shacks as houses for our people, while those in power are getting richer by the day, while they plunder and steal from the Namibian people. Namibians deserve better housing, as shelter remains a basic need as opposed to a luxury item," he said in his keynote address.
Celebrating diversity
Kauandenge commended Nudo for being represented by various non-Otjiherero-speaking Namibians.
"Today our party is represented in various non-Otjiherero-speaking Namibian areas such as the South, Kavango, Zambezi, and the northern part of our country. This testifies to our resolve as the current leadership of the party that we have and continue to welcome and embrace all Namibians, irrespective of their ethnic, sexual or regional origin, to the party," he said.
He also said “Namibians deserve jobs, and government must make sure that they create jobs for our people.
"Nudo remains committed to making sure that our people get proper houses and better job opportunities. We remain committed to the ideals of our founding fathers and mothers, that all Namibians must share the cake of our independence," he said.
