Namibia’s wealth must reach every citizen – Hamutumwa
No Namibian should go hungry
The Ohangwena governor has emphasised that Namibia has no excuse for the widespread poverty burdening a large proportion of citizens.
Ohangwena governor Kadiva Hamutumwa has called on decision-makers to ensure all Namibians benefit from the country’s rich resources.
Hamutumwa last week said no citizen should go to bed on an empty stomach, arguing that the country's abundant resources should benefit everyone.
“No child should wake up and walk long kilometres to go to school and study or be in that school or in that classroom on an empty stomach,” she said.
The governor made these remarks during the handover of food to schools in the Ohangwena region, donated by Erongo Marine Enterprises and SocioPartner Investments.
“People in a country filled with so many resources should not go to bed hungry, and I continue to say it: we should develop our regions through the fish, through the uranium, through the diamonds, through the oil and through the gold, and we are unapologetic, and we are going to be unapologetic to call upon the state and all institutions to make sure that this actually reaches our communities,” she said.
“We have no excuse to say we are poor. We cannot say we are poor while we are a country that is rich," she added.
Hamutumwa referred to neighbouring Botswana as an example, saying it has used its diamond wealth to improve the lives of its citizens.
"Every child in Botswana has free education. Every child in Botswana has free tertiary education when you school with them at universities," she said, adding that it is up to Namibian lawmakers to provide the necessary leadership to ensure the same happens in Namibia.
