Kayone warns Swapo members against violence

Omusati Swapo regional coordinator Sacky Kayone has warned that the party will not tolerate violence and urged members to be law-abiding citizens. His concerns come after two Swapo members were arrested over the weekend and charged with attempted murder for allegedly driving into an Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) gathering at Okalonda village near Outapi in the Omusati Region. By yesterday afternoon, the two were yet to appear in the Outapi Magistrate’s Court. Omusati police regional commander Commissioner Ismael Basson said the first incident happened at around 11:30 near Marula Tree Station Bar, and saw a 73-year-old man arrested in connection with the crime. The victim, a 43-year-old man, sustained injuries to his knee.The police impounded the car. The second incident happened not far from Okalonda, while the age of the suspect is not yet known.IPC Omusati regional secretary Matatias Nakweenda said other people were injured as they scattered to avoid being hit by the speeding vehicle. Political toleranceNakweenda expressed disappointment in the behaviour of the Swapo members, saying political violence should not be tolerated in a peaceful country like Namibia. Kayone previously told the youth of the party that they are the leaders of tomorrow and should serve as a ‘transmitting belt’ of the party. He added that they should avoid fighting each other and anyone else. He was at pains to elaborate, telling Namibian Sun that the incident is before the court. “However, the Swapo Party regional leadership has and will never condone political violence and provocations from whatever quarters,” he said. Kayone added that they wish to encourage political tolerance as the party continues with political campaigns for 2024 elections.
