I deserve a seat in parliament - Lukato

Elizabeth Kheibes
The president of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Lukato Martin Lukato, says given the work his party has done in the country, it deserves a seat in parliament.

He said this during an interview with Namibian Sun while highlighting the party's values and plans outlined in its manifesto.

According to him, the work the party has done since its inception in the early 2000s is reason enough for them to receive a seat in parliament.

Fighting for the people

"The party honours and respects the masses who vote people into power because, without them, there would be no political parties in Namibia. NDP is on duty 24/7 to make sure that we implement our programmes.

“We are not in parliament or cabinet, but we are vocal because we are fighting for the people of Namibia.

"If our performance is so high and better than those in parliament without being in parliament, how much more if afforded a seat?" he wanted to know.

Lukato added that people are often shocked to find out that NDP holds no seats in parliament, despite its activities and actions.

Big plans

Last month, the party recalled its only local authority councillor, Watson Kalaluka from Katima Mulilo, for alleged misconduct and replaced him with Simasiku Mukendwa.

In its manifesto, the party shared that - among other things - if voted into power, it will establish a minerals and resources development committee to oversee the country's resources.

"A committee or commission to see to it that all resources of the country are well controlled and to distribute to all citizens and to send the citizens overseas to be trained in all resource sectors to enable them to run and train the citizens - both industrial and mineral sectors, water resources and extras," it read.

Lukato added that an NDP government would limit government officials’ travels to spare state resources and make sure that every Namibian has reasonable housing with basic services.

"NDP aims to provide quality spacious houses to all the people, which will be within sustainable human settlements with basic services such as water, electricity, sanitation, schools, sports and recreation grounds and parks," the party president added.

Lukato confirmed that NDP will run in the 2024 national and presidential elections.
