Hamata explains AR move, hints others may follow

Former Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) parliamentarian Hidipo Hamata says changing political circumstances and careful reflection prompted his decision to join the Affirmative Repositioning (AR) movement.Hamata initially said he had no intention of joining another political party after he recently resigned from the PDM.“At the time of my resignation, I genuinely had no intention of joining another political party. I wanted to take time to reflect on my future in politics without rushing into any decision,” he told Namibian Sun on Monday.“After careful consideration, I concluded that joining the AR movement was the right step. In politics, circumstances evolve, and responsible leaders make decisions based on careful judgement rather than emotion.”Hamata said he was attracted to AR because of what he described as the movement’s focus on action, innovation and responding to the needs of ordinary Namibians.“I believe politics should be measured by results rather than rhetoric,” he said.Hamata declined to reveal whether AR approached him to join the movement or whether he initiated discussions.“Those discussions remain private. What is important is that the decision was voluntary, well considered and made in good faith,” Hamata said.He added that political engagements often involve confidential conversations which should be respected.New directionAsked whether Namibians should expect other PDM members or opposition politicians to join AR, Hamata said political relationships built over the years would continue.“Let me put it this way: when you cross a river, you do not intentionally leave behind those who have walked the journey with you. Politics is built on relationships, trust and shared convictions,” he said.“I have worked with many people over the years, and naturally I will continue engaging them.”He dismissed suggestions that disagreements with PDM president McHenry Venaani, the party leadership or the party's direction prompted his departure.“My decision was based on that assessment rather than on personal differences with any individual. I respect everyone I worked with in the PDM and wish them well,” he said.Hamata said he was not promised a leadership position, parliamentary opportunity or any other political role as an incentive to join AR.“No. Political parties should never be built around promises of positions. Positions are earned through hard work, commitment and the confidence of both party members and the electorate,” he said.“I joined AR because I believe in contributing to its mission, not because of any promised office.”On what he brings to AR, he said he would rely on his political experience, discipline and willingness to work rather than make promises about his contribution.“I do not make grand promises. I believe in hard work, discipline and producing results. I bring experience, commitment and a willingness to serve,” he said.He added that his role within AR would be determined by the movement and its members.
