ECN reports smooth start to regional and local elections
The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has confirmed a smooth and timely start to the 7th Regional Council and Local Authority Elections, with all 4 827 polling stations opening at 07:00 this morning.
Speaking at the ECN’s headquarters in Windhoek during the first update on the voting process, ECN chairperson Dr Elsie Nghikembua said voting was progressing efficiently across the country.
Nghikembua described the day as a “milestone” in Namibia’s democratic journey, marking yet another opportunity for citizens to choose their leaders at regional and local levels. “Voter turnout has thus far been encouraging, with many citizens arriving early to cast their votes.”
According to Nghikembua, the ECN’s accessibility measures were fully operational, enabling elderly voters and persons with disabilities to vote with ease.
To safeguard the integrity and transparency of the election, political party agents and accredited observers from various organisations were deployed at polling stations nationwide.
“We welcome their presence, as it reinforces the credibility of our electoral system,” said Nghikembua.
Although parts of the Zambezi, Oshikoto and Khomas regions experienced mild rainfall, the ECN confirmed that no disruptions had been recorded and that weather conditions were being closely monitored.
Nghikembua urged all registered voters to participate in the elections, noting that although Namibia has 121 constituencies, voting is taking place in 120 due to the uncontested Mankupi Constituency. Ballots are also being cast in 59 local authorities across the country.
“With polls open until 21:00, I encourage patience, respect and unity among voters and election officials,” she said. “An election is not just a procedure; it is a demonstration of our democratic rights and responsibilities.”
She concluded by calling on Namibians to show the world the strength of the country’s democratic spirit. “Thank you, and may the spirit of democracy guide us today and always,” she said.
