Alliances key to beat Swapo at 2024 polls – UPM

News in short

The United People's Movement (UPM) says forging political alliances is opposition parties’ best tool to defeat the ruling Swapo Party at the national polls next year.

With the right alliances, the opposition will have a better chance, the party said, and called on interested parties to join hands.

"The fact that the three opposition parties have decided to contest separately already strengthens the ruling party's grip come 2024," UPM said in a statement last weekend.

It further noted that the just-ended by-election in the Moses //Garoëb constituency revealed signs of a decline in support for opposition parties.

"This decline can be seen as being caused by the regular infighting, disagreements and failure to reach consensus between opposition parties in coalitions/alliances, which should be for the benefit of the voters who put them in office," the party said.

UPM announced that it "will not contest presidential elections, but will ... decide which opposition presidential candidate to support and inform [its] members accordingly”.
