Policing a calling, not just a job opportunity – Kawana
Safety and security minister Albert Kawana says police officers should be devoted and passionate about their career and not see it solely as a means of income.
He made the remarks on Saturday during the official inauguration of the N$85 million-dollar state-of-the-art Kavango West police headquarters in Nkurenkuru.
“It is important for me to stress that the existence of regional headquarters and police stations alone do not mean anything if they are not supported by a sufficient number of police officers who are fully devoted to their career.
“Such officers must be disciplined, loyal and patriotic and consider their profession a calling, not just a job opportunity.”
Corrupt cops
This statement comes just days after the minister publicly spoke out against corrupt police officers who are in cahoots with criminals, despite their responsibility to ensure public safety.
Kawana also spoke on issues of service delivery, calling on those who will be working at the new headquarters to serve the public effectively and with passion.
“You will be working here in order to render efficient service delivery to our citizens and foreign guests alike. Do not come to work late with the speed of a snail. Do not leave your offices early with the speed of a fastest jet fighter in the world as if the building is on fire,” he said.
“The Namibian government, through the ministry, has created a conducive work environment for you. Therefore, you have no reason why you cannot serve our citizens according to their expectations.
“Let us look after this state-of-the-art building. Let us protect it from vandalism. Let us serve our people with a smile and with courtesy. Let us play our part to [allow] Namibia to continue to shine among the nations of the world,” he said.
