Imalwa yet to decide on Shikongo’s 2022 fatal accident

Six months after she received the docket, prosecutor general, Martha Imalwa is yet to decide whether Namibian Police inspector-general Joseph Shikongo will be prosecuted or not for the fatal car accident that claimed three lives.

Deputy inspector-general, Eneas Mutota last week confirmed to Namibian Sun that the docket was sent to Imalwa’s office around April for a decision.

“The matter now lies with the office of the prosecutor general. We have done and completed our investigations,” Mutota said.

This is the second time the docket is sent to Imalwa’s office after it was previously sent in June 2023 but returned to the police some few months later as more information was needed.

When contacted for comment yesterday, Imalwa told Namibian Sun that she will respond to the police once she has made her decision.

“The decision is not yet made. I do not inform the media, I inform the responsible person,” Imalwa responded.

Frustration

Shikongo was involved in the accident which took place at Iindangungu village on the Ondangwa-Oshikango main road at about 01:00 on 30 December 2022, when his private vehicle - a white Toyota Hilux double cab - collided head-on with a white Hyundai hatchback.

All three occupants of the Hyundai died on the spot.

The sole survivor of the crash, Shikongo was rushed to hospital for medical attention.

The deceased were identified as Frans Pombili Ndengu (27) from Omen a village, Sofia Natangwe Ananias (22) from Onekwaya West village and Stefanus Hafeni Shahafifange Lukas (22) from Eendobe village.

The accident has been shrouded in secrecy as details remain sketchy - even for the deceased’s families.

There have also been calls to criminally charge Shikongo, who previously said he is not immune to the law and will stand trial if he has to.

Since 2023, the families of the deceased have been expressing their frustration over how the matter is being handled alleging that the police is covering up a crime because their boss is involved.

They expressed issues as to why Shikongo’s vehicle was immediately removed from the scene and its location not known.

Activist, Michael Amushelelo has been at the forefront of calling for justice in this matter, which saw Shikongo threatening him legally over his consistent remarks on the accident.
