12-year-old girl fatally struck by car
A 12-year-old girl died on Monday after she was struck by a car on the Trans Caprivi Highway near Sambyu Village in the Kavango East Region.
Acting regional commander of the Namibian Police, Deputy Commissioner Eino Nambahu, confirmed the incident, which took place around 16:00.
The deceased was identified as Kakuhu Nyundu, a grade four pupil at Mbambangundu Combined School and resident of the Sambyu village. Her next of kin were informed.
Nambahu said it was alleged that the driver (24) of a sedan vehicle struck the victim, who was walking on the side of the road facing the direction of oncoming vehicles. “Kakuhu Nyundu died on the spot. At the time of the incident, she was among four other housemates on their way home,” he said.
“The Namibian Police in the region, while continuing with its community awareness programmes, encourages parents, teachers, and churches to continue educating the public about the dangers of walking on the tared road, as the police alone cannot influence changes,” he added.
“The roadside walking by pedestrians has been improving due to our community affairs education forums conducted at schools, churches and other community gatherings. However, pedestrian deaths continue to be recorded. This habit is not only observed among school kids but also among the elderly. Therefore, public members are warned to discontinue this practice,” Nambahu stressed.
