FAREWELL TO A TOWERING DIPLOMAT:

FAREWELL TO A TOWERING DIPLOMAT: President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah yesterday expressed her condolences on the passing of Botswana ambassador Legwaila Joseph Legwaila, describing him as “a towering diplomat, a son of Africa and a true friend of Namibia.”

According to the president’s statement, Legwaila played a pivotal role during Namibia’s road to independence and became a close friend of the late Namibian presidents Hage Geingob and Dr Theo-Ben Gurirab.

“These friendships reflected the deep bonds of cooperation that anchored the liberation movements of our region,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said.

She added that Legwaila’s “calm diplomacy, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to peace helped steer Namibia through one of the most delicate moments in our history, ensuring that our transition to independence was peaceful, just, and credible.”

Ambassador Legwaila served as deputy special representative of the United Nations Secretary-General under the United Nations Transition Assistance Group. “His name will forever be etched in the story of Namibia’s freedom and in the enduring friendship between our two nations,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said.
