Community hero recognised
News in short
Community hero Selma Lucas walked away with N$20 000 for herself and N$80 000 for her community soup kitchen last weekend.
Metro Namibia launched the Namibia Community Heroes initiative in 2021, which aims to recognise and celebrate Namibians from all walks of life who make a significant contribution to their community through charity work.
According to a statement by the retail giant, Namibians were invited to nominate their community hero on either Omulunga Radio or Nova 103.5.
"The winner was determined by public vote, and more than 1 700 votes were sent in. Garnering 32% of the votes, Selma Lucas walked away with the Metro Namibia community hero 2022 title," it read.
Lucas' story is one of inspiration and resilience. After losing her husband last year, she held on to her passion for serving. She runs a soup kitchen every Saturday in the Hakahana informal settlement, while she has also taken it upon herself to run various youth engagement initiatives.
Kobus Boshoff, Metro marketing and merchandising executive, said the project will continue for as long as it helps to develop the country.
