Pilot programme launched to help street children
A five-week pilot programme in Henties Bay is giving over 80 street children the chance to rehabilitate and reintegrate into society, combining practical training with psychosocial support.
Child welfare minister Emma Kantema visited the National Youth Service (NYS) in Henties Bay recently, where the children, aged 12 to 18, are undergoing training.
The ministry, in partnership with the NYS, designed the initiative to provide tailored training for children living and working on the streets. It is the first programme of its kind in Namibia.
The programme currently accommodates children from the Hardap, Khomas, Erongo, Otjozondjupa and Omaheke regions. Participants receive instruction in discipline, voluntarism and basic agricultural skills, alongside psychotherapeutic support to address emotional and psychological challenges.
