SHORT NEWS: NamWater admits water hardness issue in Otjiwarongo
NamWater has acknowledged that water hardness remains a concern in Otjiwarongo, with some of the Corporation’s boreholes in and around the town producing hard water.
Spokesperson Lot Ndamanomhata confirmed yesterday that the issue is linked to the characteristics of the Corporation’s water supply sources. “The current infrastructure was not originally designed to treat water hardness,” he said. Residents have raised concerns over the quality of water, prompting NamWater to reassure the public that it continuously monitors water quality and routinely cleans its reservoirs to minimise scale build-up. The Corporation is also engaging stakeholders, including the Municipality of Otjiwarongo and local residents, to sensitise them on the matter. Ndamanomhata revealed that NamWater has initiated a project to assess the viability of introducing water-softening technologies nationwide. “An earlier procurement process did not yield the desired outcomes, and therefore a revised approach is being considered to directly engage specialised suppliers in this field,” he said. NamWater emphasised its commitment to exploring sustainable solutions and assured residents that updates will be provided as the project progresses.
