Isaks drowning: Goagoses makes U-turn on promises

A week after visiting the family of six-year-old Jayden Isaks, who drowned in a Grysblok sewage dam last month, the deputy minister of urban and rural development Natalia Goagoses has denied ever promising to assist them.This after, during visit at the family home last week, Goagoses blinked back tears and said that, in her capacity, she will "make sure that the victim has a decent funeral".At the time, she said the responsibility would be shared by her and relevant stakeholders who are willing and able, adding that no policy compels her ministry to be liable for such costs.However, when Namibian Sun contacted her again, Goagoses distanced herself from such promises and said the responsibility falls on John Pandeni constituency councillor, Shaalukeni John Mwoonde."Please don&#039;t call me any more regarding logistics for the child&#039;s funeral. Call the constituency councillor for that," she said during a telephonic interview.No answersAccording to Isaks mother Chantelle Mentoor, the family felt like they had to beg for help, despite being comforted with words of support."I am not happy. We are being treated as if we are beggars and made to feel like we should go on our knees and beg for help." she said.Isaks, who was set to start grade one in just a few weeks, drowned on Sunday, 30 October. His body was recovered by private diver Percy Openshaw the next day.EffortsAccording to coordinating administrator Jackey Tjikumise, the total cost for Isaks’ funeral – which will take place this Saturday – is N$9 144.79, adding that the John Pandeni Constituency contributed N$4 500.The family couldn&#039;t be reached for further comment.
