Gobabis sewer complaint escalated to national authorities
A Gobabis resident has urged national authorities to intervene urgently over a sewer leak she says has remained unrepaired since 28 February.
The complaint is contained in an official letter sent last Monday to several government institutions and oversight bodies.
The letter, written by resident Lehana Nel, describes the situation as a serious risk to public health, the environment and service delivery in the town.
According to Nel, untreated sewage is still flowing in the open, with no adequate intervention or clear feedback to residents.
The letter was addressed to, among others, the health and urban and rural development ministries, as well as the ombudsman, the auditor-general's office, the Anti-Corruption Commission of Namibia (ACC), the Office of the President, the governor of the Omaheke region and the chief executive officer of the Gobabis municipality.
Nel asked that authorities investigate the municipality’s handling of the sewage leak.
The letter asked that official feedback be provided, with reasons for the delay, the officials responsible, and the emergency and long-term measures to be implemented.
At the time of going to press, the Gobabis municipality had not yet responded to repeated requests for comment on the allegations.
