EDITORIAL: Why leaders must eat last

In the US Marine Corps, junior officers eat first and their bosses last. They joke that "if a senior is found eating first, call the police because he is a Russian spy".Any leadership that upholds the idea that people come first would not have a separate menu for the lords and another for the peasants, as was set to happen at Independence Day celebrations set to take place at Outapi next week, until the public voiced its disdain.As Simon Sinek writes, “great leaders truly care about those they are privileged to lead and understand that the true cost of leadership privilege comes at the expense of self-interest”.It doesn’t take anything away from a minister, governor or president if an ordinary Joe Sixpack from Ombafi or Okafitu kaKahala is served the same menu as those dignitaries. Leaders must ensure that those they are responsible for are looked after first.President Hage Geingob gets a lot of flak for his administration&#039;s numerous errors, yet the president is also surrounded by suspect individuals. As the letterhead on the two menus comes from State House, it is clear that this regrettable choice was made there.There is already enough humiliation experienced by the impoverished in our community. There is no honour in treating them with even more contempt and reminding them that their only purpose at Outapi next week will be to applaud the masters.
