EDITORIAL: The Namibia we want will not build itself

A Namibia created by Namibians themselves
A nation is never built by criticism alone.

Every generation inherits a country. But every generation also has a choice to either accept that country as it is, or to shape it into what it ought to become.

Namibians today stand at such a crossroads.

It is easy to complain about corruption, poor service delivery, rising crime, unemployment, declining standards and weakening institutions. It is even easier to point fingers at politicians, public servants, businesses or foreign interests. But a nation is never built by criticism alone. It is built by citizens who decide that the future is too important to outsource.

The society we desire will not emerge by accident. It will not arrive because someone else promised it during an election campaign. It will not be delivered by donors, consultants or foreign governments. It must be deliberately created by Namibians themselves.

History teaches us that every enduring nation was built by people who accepted responsibility for its direction. Our independence was not handed to us as an act of charity. It was earned through sacrifice, courage and a shared national vision. The same spirit is now required to build the Namibia that independence made possible.

We often wait for leaders to lead. Yet leadership is not confined to Cabinet rooms or Parliament. It begins in homes where parents teach integrity. It lives in classrooms where teachers inspire excellence. It grows in businesses that reject corruption, and in communities that refuse lawlessness.

A healthy democracy depends not only on good leaders but also on good citizens.

That is why we must be careful not to surrender the responsibility of defining our national values to outsiders. Friends of Namibia are welcome. Investors are welcome. International partners are welcome. But the blueprint for Namibia must always remain in Namibian hands.
