EDITORIAL: The duty of citizens in a free Namibia

Staff Reporter

This weekend, Namibia marks 36 years of independence. For decades, our celebrations have rightly honoured those who fought for freedom, and we hold our leaders accountable for translating that freedom into tangible progress.

But there is another side of independence that often goes unspoken: the duty of citizens. In a free republic, freedom is not only a gift – it is a responsibility, and one that cannot be fulfilled by leaders alone.

Every citizen has a role to play in ensuring that freedom is meaningful. It is the citizen who refuses to tolerate corruption in their daily interactions, who challenges injustice and who holds public officials to account – not only during elections, but at every level of society. It is the citizen who engages in local governance, contributes to community development and participates in civic life beyond the ballot box.

A republic cannot thrive if freedom is treated as a spectator sport. Too often, people demand accountability from leaders while remaining passive, silent or indifferent in their own communities. Independence is squandered when citizens ignore their schools, their health systems or their neighbourhoods, expecting government alone to carry the burden of nation-building. Real freedom requires vigilance, active participation and the courage to speak and act for the common good.

In a free republic, liberty is not just something given – it is something nurtured, protected and expanded through the choices we make every day.

As we commemorate 36 years of independence, let us remember that Namibia’s future is not shaped solely in the offices of ministers or the halls of parliament. It is shaped in the streets, the workplaces, the homes and the hearts of its people. Freedom is real only when we, the citizens, take it seriously.
