EDITORIAL: Swapo needs genuine introspection

Swapo think tank’s call for the party to redeem itself and embark on a path of moral uprightness is a breath of fresh air.Except, some of the recommendations on how to achieve this are too pedestrian, if not deceptive. For example, advising that the party withholds opening its expensively-assembled headquarters until after the 2024 election is Comedy Central material.The Swapo HQ is like that biblical city built on a hill and declared the light of the world in Canaanite times. It cannot be hidden.Indeed, it is this building whose light is beaming towards the dark patient wards and operating rooms of the dilapidated Katutura State Hospital.That some in Swapo have admitted there is need for redemption is itself a positive sign from the party’s deeply-rooted denialist history. Solutions have to be bold and genuine – not cosmetic.Taking responsibility demonstrates that some leaders in Swapo, maybe in an underwhelming minority, value truth over the easier path of casting blame on unknown dark forces.After all, self-correction, a whispered mantra within Swapo’s corridors of power, starts with admitting the mistakes made so far – before embarking on correcting them.Brutal honesty is thus the tonic for Swapo’s redemption. The party cannot trade in its impregnable revolutionary history with becoming a haven for opportunists and economic refugees seeking to advance their personal agendas at the expense of the masses on whose shoulders the party rested for 62 years.
