EDITORIAL: Scrutiny is not sensationalism

The Ministry of International Relations and Trade is wrong to dismiss as ‘sensationalist’ a report highlighting the extensive family links within its ranks.The issue was never that relatives work in the same ministry. The issue is the sheer scale of those relationships and the legitimate public interest they generate.When dozens of officials in a single ministry are connected by family ties – whether as spouses, parents, children or siblings – it ceases to be an ordinary staffing matter. It becomes a governance issue deserving of public scrutiny.That scrutiny should not be mistaken for an accusation of wrongdoing.It is entirely possible that every official mentioned was appointed on merit and satisfied every legal and professional requirement. If that is indeed the case, the ministry has every right to present the facts and reassure the public that recruitment processes were fair, competitive and transparent.What it cannot reasonably do is argue that the matter should never have been reported in the first place.Public institutions are funded by taxpayers. Their recruitment practices are therefore matters of public interest, particularly where patterns emerge that could reasonably give rise to questions about fairness, perception or equal access to opportunity.The ministry's response appears to suggest that because no wrongdoing has been established, the media had no basis for reporting the story. That is a misunderstanding of journalism's role.The media is not required to prove misconduct before reporting facts that raise legitimate public-interest questions.Indeed, the ministry should have anticipated that such an unusual concentration of family relationships would attract attention. In any public institution, a pattern of this nature would invite questions, regardless of whether it occurred in foreign affairs, health, education or finance.Those questions are neither malicious nor sensational. They are inevitable.
