EDITORIAL: Open up the gay discourse

The fact that our country is actively having debates about homosexuality is positive. We have argued in the past that, unless they go beyond the bounds of free expression, even viewpoints that are considered "harmful" should be permitted in the discourse.Even nations that are now held up as role models for equal sexual rights have openly acknowledged that their own paths to where they are today were rocky and difficult. Nonetheless, there is still a simmering unrest in those countries among conservatives who view homosexuality as an unnatural evil.Namibia may be at a turning point right now. There will be opposition from those who think the nation cannot "degenerate" into a homosexual paradise - and these people make up the vast majority. Yet, as we have already stated, any law that makes same-sex marriages lawful has no bearing whatsoever on those who are not part of the LGBTQ community. As a result, the pushback by conservatives is pointless or unneeded.Perhaps what is required is a national forum where all sides can respectfully present their cases. It serves no use for either side to yell profanities from their cocoons in support of their position if their supposed opponents are also doing so from a mile away. We can all sing together, but we can&#039;t converse simultaneously.We currently have a disjointed national dialogue, which is a good place to start. Now that the process has been set up for civility, we need to arrange a meeting around a beer table.
