EDITORIAL: Love, oh love

In his 1992 song ‘Love, Oh Love’, American singer and songwriter Lionel Richie intones, among other things, that “it&#039;s time to stand up to a new world that is now so near. From the bottom to the top, to the leaders of the land, we all have one heart – every one of us must lend a hand”.The song remains one of the best ever recorded for the sake of humanity and its preservation – when virtually all love songs in history are meant to whip up an appetite for intimacy and bedroom monkeyshines.Today, the song resonates with the aspirations of many Namibians, who hope and pray that those lyrics become the official language in our corridors of power in 2023. That, indeed, it’s time to stand up to a new world that is so near but which just needs a tweak of political will and people-centric leadership to reach it.With oil discovery, for example, the world where poverty and socio-economic distress is eradicated is so near – on paper.Having one heart, as Richie so richly envisioned, has never come to pass. If anything, hearts have only drifted further apart. In politics and state governance, many of our leaders have become shadows of their former brave selves, men and women who helped liberate us.This year provides an umpteenth window of opportunity to reflect and reset – not deflect.
