EDITORIAL: Journalism matters - now more than ever

In every democracy worth its name, journalism serves as both a mirror and a watchdog. It reflects society back to itself – its triumphs, failures, aspirations and shortcomings – while simultaneously keeping a watchful eye on those entrusted with power. Namibia is no exception.Without journalists, many of the scandals that have shaken our nation would never have come to light. Corruption would flourish in the shadows. Public funds could disappear without scrutiny. Citizens would be left to rely on rumours, propaganda and carefully crafted official narratives, with little means of separating fact from fiction.Journalists are often the first responders to societal challenges. They document injustice. They expose wrongdoing. They amplify the voices of the marginalised. They ask uncomfortable questions when others would prefer silence. They provide information that empowers citizens to make informed decisions about their lives.A Namibia without journalism would be a Namibia with less accountability, less transparency and less democracy. The value of journalism is often most apparent only when it is absent.Sadly, this work is rarely glamorous. Today, the journalism industry faces formidable challenges. Newsrooms operate with limited resources. Advertising revenues continue to shrink. Journalists frequently endure public criticism, online harassment and threats to their personal safety.Despite these obstacles, the mission remains unchanged. The need for credible, professional journalism has never been greater. In an age where falsehoods can travel across continents in seconds, trustworthy reporting is not a luxury; it is a public necessity. To Namibia's journalists, your work matters. It matters when you sit through lengthy council meetings that few others attend. It matters when you travel hundreds of kilometres to tell the story of a forgotten community. It matters when you hold a microphone before an ordinary citizen and allow their voice to be heard.
