EDITORIAL: Investment cannot thrive on slogans alone

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah's state visit to China last week rightly placed investment at the centre of Namibia's economic diplomacy. As government courts Chinese investors and seeks to deepen commercial ties, it is also an opportune moment for some uncomfortable introspection at home.There is little value in travelling the world marketing Namibia as an investment destination if our domestic investment policy environment tells a different story.The reality is that Namibia has cultivated one of the most investment-unfriendly environments in the region. That is not to suggest the country lacks potential. On the contrary, we are blessed with political stability, a sound legal system, strategic ports, abundant natural resources and a relatively sophisticated financial sector. These are significant advantages. Yet we too often undermine them through policy uncertainty, cumbersome regulation and an attitude that suggests investors need Namibia more than Namibia needs investors. That assumption is deeply flawed.Our mineral wealth, particularly uranium and other critical minerals, will always attract global interest. Investors in extractive industries are prepared to navigate difficult environments because the resources simply cannot be relocated. But we cannot mistake that reality for a broader endorsement of our investment climate.Outside mining, the competition for capital is fierce. Manufacturers, technology companies, logistics firms, financial services providers and industrial investors have choices. They compare tax regimes, regulatory certainty, labour markets, local ownership requirements, administrative efficiency and the ease of doing business. Capital is mobile. If one jurisdiction appears unnecessarily complicated or unpredictable, investors simply move elsewhere.Our domestic market is limited, and we are geographically distant from many major consumer markets. These realities demand humility, not arrogance. We should be working harder than our competitors to attract investment, not making it more difficult through layers of bureaucracy and ever-changing policy signals.
