EDITORIAL: Graduation, then reality kicks in

It is graduation week - that time of year when lecture halls erupt into celebration, and families gather in pride and relief. Parents beam with joy, recalling the sacrifices that carried their children to this moment.

For graduates, hope is at its peak. Armed with degrees and diplomas, they step into the world believing that within weeks or months, they will secure jobs, build careers, and begin shaping independent lives.

But once Gaudeamus igitur, the popular Latin academic anthem, fades and the gowns are packed away, a far harsher reality awaits.

The first and most brutal truth is that there are simply not enough jobs. Namibia’s economy is not generating opportunities at a pace that matches the growing number of graduates. With youth unemployment hovering around 47%, nearly half of young people are left stranded.

The second illusion is entrepreneurship. It is often presented as the silver bullet - the fallback plan for those who cannot find employment. But financial institutions, including state-backed ones, are reluctant to fund individuals with no track record.

Then there is the issue of market saturation. Certain qualifications have flooded the system. Teaching, nursing, and other popular programmes continue to produce graduates in numbers that the job market cannot absorb.

None of this diminishes the value of education. On the contrary, education remains one of the most powerful tools for personal and national development. But its true worth is only realised when it can be put to use.

This is not a message of despair, but a call for honesty. Graduates deserve to celebrate their achievements without illusion, and policymakers must confront the widening gap between education and employment.

For many graduates, the real test begins after the applause fades. Congratulations to the class of 2026 - and strength for the road ahead.
