EDITORIAL: Good luck, Jackie!
Barry Rukoro, Franco Cosmos and now Jackie Gertze. That’s three secretaries-general at the Namibia Football Association (NFA) between 2019 and 2022 – a period during which no domestic football took place, except for the joke that was the Namibia Premier Football League (NPFL), which lasted shorter than a winter day.
Gertze would want to outdo both Rukoro and Cosmos for a myriad of reasons. First, while domestic football took place during Rukoro’s time, the general administration of the NFA – including its financial accountability – was messy.
Not to be outdone in messing things up, Cosmos came in and aligned himself with forces of destruction that called themselves ‘progressive’ and who no one voted into running the affairs of our football. Whenever the ‘Progressive Forces’ asked Cosmos to jump, he submissively asked ‘how high?’ and obliged like a disciple from the biblical times. And, just like Jesus, he now carries his cross alone.
Cosmos has carved his place in the history books as the only substantive NFA secretary-general under whose reign no domestic football conclusively took place. Gertze wouldn’t want that.
As the first ever woman secretary-general, albeit acting, she represents not only the nation at large but symbolically a constituency that continues to be elbowed to the periphery of leadership – whether in sport or politics.
Gertze has a template on now not to run football. She has no reason to fail.
