Editorial: FMD demands Covid-style public briefings

Namibia's response to the foot-and-mouth crisis requires the same openness and regular public communication that characterised the government's handling of Covid-19.Government has announced containment measures and released infection figures, but important questions remain unanswered. Where did the outbreak originate? Have any animals died or been culled? Which farms are affected, and what exactly is happening in the containment areas?The absence of detailed, consistent explanations creates room for speculation, particularly when restrictions disrupt farming, livestock trading, meat processing and employment.During Covid-19, the nation received regular briefings explaining infections, deaths, restrictions and government interventions. The public knew who was responsible for providing answers.FMD deserves similar attention. Namibia's livestock industry faces devastating losses, with billions of dollars and thousands of livelihoods at risk.Government must designate a credible official to provide regular, comprehensive updates, explain decisions and answer questions openly. Where investigations remain incomplete, the public should be told so.Disease containment cannot depend on veterinary measures alone. Public confidence, cooperation and compliance require reliable information.Namibians should not have to rely on speculation to understand a national economic emergency.
