EDITORIAL: Farewell to a titan
The pillar that has held our nation upright for decades will be laid to rest tomorrow, sealed into eternity. Never again will our eyes behold the icon that was Sam Nujoma, nor will our ears be stirred by the cadence of his voice, now silenced forever.
But grief, no matter how deep, cannot halt the march of a nation. South African writer Prince Mashele captured this truth poignantly: “The children who refuse to leave the graveside after burying their father who was a breadwinner, are bound to succumb to starvation. It does not matter how violently you sob, the dead will never return.”
We must find among ourselves those who carry fragments of Nujoma’s indomitable spirit. No single person can mirror his every virtue, but together, we can embody his essence. Let one among us carry his unshakable love for Namibia and Africa. Let another inherit his audacity, his revolutionary zeal. Piece by piece, we shall assemble the kind of nation he dreamed of – one propelled by unity, purpose and an unrelenting drive toward prosperity. A force so powerful, not even thermal energy could rival its strength.
Nujoma leaves behind more than just history – he leaves a masterclass in endurance, an unyielding sense of purpose, and a testament to the boundless force of human will. He would not want us lingering by his graveside, drowning in sorrow. If he could rise one last time, he would command us to step away from Heroes’ Acre, wipe our tears, and go build the republic he bled for.
There was, and will always be, only one Sam Nujoma. May his revolutionary soul rest in eternal peace. We will take it from here.
