EDITORIAL: Build one economy from three sectors

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s call to connect creativity, sport and tourism offers Namibia a practical route to jobs and economic diversification.A sporting event should not begin and end with the competition. It can attract visitors who need transport, accommodation and food, while creating work for musicians, designers, photographers, broadcasters, vendors and tour guides. Creative professionals give the event its identity and market it to wider audiences, while tourism converts that attention into spending across communities. This is the economic chain the president wants Namibia to build. Her message that these sectors must no longer be treated as side activities is timely, but coordination will determine whether the idea succeeds. Namibia needs an integrated calendar linking sporting and cultural events to destination packages, local merchandise, food, entertainment and media products. Organisers should procure locally, pay professionals fairly and ensure communities hosting events receive tangible benefits. Government must provide suitable facilities, efficient transport and supportive policies, while businesses invest in promotion, broadcasting and visitor experiences. Namibia already possesses the talent, culture and landscapes. Connecting them deliberately can turn a football match, boxing contest, festival or cycling tour into an economic platform supporting many industries rather than a once-off event.
