To overcome poverty and the impact of the economic crisis in our society, we need to envision our future and that of the next. We need to free our minds and imagine the good that has never happened before. We need to imagine things and make them happen.But lately everything seems to fail us – our economy, our leaders.Graduates keep joining other graduates in the unemployment sector because there is no hope. It seems government has no agenda for addressing the current economic crisis.Word from the Namibian Statistics Agency (NSA) has it that the Namibian economy has entered a full recession – our economy is declining and a widespread rise in unemployment is being experienced. We have leaders who are fully aware of the current state of affairs, yet they fail to tackle the ongoing crisis.Looking at the big picture, we may say that there are numerous factors, some questionable and some unproven, that have led us into the economic downfall – the same ones leading us deeper in the critical state.Reality checkAccording to The Balance (www.thebalancemoney.com), the financial collapse was primarily caused by financial industry deregulation, which prevented banks from engaging in hedge fund trading with derivatives.Banks then demanded more mortgages to support the profitable sale of these derivatives; on this note, aspects such as the budget cut can be regarded as leading us into more financial calamity and debt.But also, looking at the budget cuts, they might serve Namibian communities well in the sense that they are being exposed to reality, the harsh and genuine version of it, of course.Through the reduction of funds allocated to different ministries, various unethical activities, such as fraud, are reduced because the money will go directly to the needy and be targeted instead of sticking around to serve as temptations for officials.In this way, more expenditures and expenses will be cut off due to insufficient funds, even though some or most of them may be highly crucial. This deprives the urge of those officials who have been abducted by greed.The other sideTurning a sharp eye to the other side of the coin, some believe that budget cuts are indeed worsening the financial crisis.As a result of reduced funds, various ministries have failed to achieve their full potential and mandate.The education ministry, for instance, has been failing to provide quality education as a result of the tight budget. Schools have been forced to accept dilapidated conditions.What hurts more than working your biscuits off when at the end of the month you will be left to feed yourself and your family on the thin remains of the unwise spending of government officials?In general, Namibian communities are crying unheard cries.The government is too negligent on things that truly matter to society.It spends millions on commercial celebrations when these very millions could be used to build industries and platforms that can develop us and provide jobs.All for oneIt is high time our leaders got a taste of reality; they should snap out of all the self-enriching ideologies and lose all forms of corruption and all the greed and selfishness.Unnecessary travel, government vehicles and air travel, overtime, and unauthorised expenditures should all be cancelled.How about every ministry makes a presentation of how they will individually cut out the fat?Why raise taxes on the already impoverished and struggling while our "flawless" ministers live large and continue to receive housing and transportation benefits, as well as luxury gadgets that they clearly can afford?Who is our government for?
