Beyond hero recognition: What Kornelius Shimwafeni teaches us about bravery and humanity

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah deserves commendation for placing national recognition on 16-year-old Kornelius Shimwafeni, whose extraordinary act of courage saved the lives of infant twins after their distressed mother abandoned them in a water pond. Beyond honouring one young Namibian, this gesture sends a powerful message to the nation: 36 years into our Independence, we must continue to honour the heroes of our liberation struggle while also recognising ordinary Namibians who perform extraordinary acts in the service of others.Kornelius did not have a uniform, a title or special training. He simply saw two babies in danger and acted. Despite not knowing how to swim, he jumped into the pond because, in his own words, if they were dying, “we would die together”. That is the essence of bravery and selflessness.The President’s decision to recognise him should therefore be welcomed as more than a ceremonial honour. It is an investment in the values we want to see in the Namibia of tomorrow. At a time when young people are constantly exposed to negative influences, Kornelius offers a powerful alternative example: courage, compassion, and service to others are also worthy of recognition and admiration.We live in a world saturated with social media, where some people's instinct when witnessing a disturbing incident is to take out a cellphone and record rather than intervene, seek help, or protect a fellow human being. We have seen disturbing instances of violence where bystanders stand by, laugh and record as another person is assaulted. Watched and recordedRecently, a video circulated widely on social media showing a man accused of stealing a cellphone being subjected to a brutal assault, with his genitals being pulled and squeezed as those around him watched and recorded. Beyond the brutality of the assault itself, the incident raises an uncomfortable question about what happens to our sense of humanity when the suffering of another person becomes content for public consumption rather than a moment demanding intervention and compassion. Kornelius challenges us to ask ourselves a difficult question: What would I do if I were there? Would I record, watch, laugh or act?The 2026 Heroes Day theme, “Build on Bravery, Bound for a Prosperous Future,” could not be more appropriate. Prosperity is not built only through economic growth and infrastructure; it is also built through citizens who care about one another and are prepared to act when it matters.The recognition of Kornelius should therefore inspire more young Namibians to choose courage over indifference, service over selfishness and humanity over spectatorship.As we commemorate 36 years of Independence, let us broaden our understanding of heroism. Our liberation heroes gave us a free Namibia.
