Shikongo urges police cadets to serve honourably
Namibian Police chief Joseph Shikongo has urged 1 083 cadet constables undergoing training in Ondangwa to serve with passion, discipline and unwavering commitment.
He warned the recruits that policing is not merely a job but a lifelong calling.
During a preparatory meeting on Monday at the Ondangwa Trade Fair Centre in the Oshana region, the inspector general said: “This profession requires people with courage, determination and a willingness to make sacrifices for their country," Shikongo said.
"For those of you who joined for different reasons, be it seeking a salary, funding for further studies or because you couldn’t find another job, I want to change that mindset. I encourage everyone to commit to the police force until retirement."
Shikongo, who has served in the police for 47 years, addressed the cadets currently completing a nine-month basic training programme.
The cadet training kicked off in August and the group are set to graduate in May.
On-the-ground service
Shikongo reminded the recruits they have been well-trained to become professional and disciplined officers once deployed.
He urged them to serve the community and the country effectively and efficiently, while upholding high ethical standards.
Once deployed, he said, they will be expected to maintain law and order with humility, integrity, accountability and transparency.
The head of the police also emphasised the importance of professionalism and responsiveness, reminding the cadets that policing often requires sacrifice.
“You must be willing to put your boots on the ground and serve the community and the nation. If there is no transport available, you must be prepared to walk to the scene of an emergency,” Shikongo said.
In addition to operational discipline, he called on the recruits to practise financial discipline as they prepare to enter the workforce, warning that poor money management can undermine both personal wellbeing and professional performance.
