The Oshikoto Regional Council has begun distributing thousands of bags of rice to vulnerable households, donated to Namibia by the government of South Korea.

In a media statement, senior public relations officer Peter Nehale confirmed that a total of 9 203 bags, each weighing 40 kg, were allocated to Oshikoto through the Office of the Prime Minister.

Nehale said more than 4 320 bags have already been received at the regional warehouse in Omuthiya, with distribution successfully underway in the Guinas and Onipa constituencies.

He indicated that the donation will be rolled out across all 11 constituencies, with beneficiaries identified through the drought relief database managed by constituency offices and distribution centres. Allocation to each constituency will be based on the number of registered beneficiaries.

Nehale said the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to assist communities still grappling with the effects of the 2024 drought while also promoting improved nutrition among vulnerable groups.

The council has called on communities to ensure that access roads remain in good condition to facilitate smooth delivery of the food aid.

It further expressed gratitude to the South Korean government, noting that the assistance will play a crucial role in helping low-income households.

The distribution process is expected to continue in the coming weeks until all identified beneficiaries across the region have been reached.
