Ombika volunteers have worked without pay for years

For more than eight years, volunteers at the Ombika Solid Waste Recycling Centre located at Etosha National Park's Andersson Gate have worked tirelessly without pay, dedicating their time three days a week to ensure the facility remains operational.

Speaking on behalf of the group last week, Johannes Khomob said they initially began volunteering due to a lack of opportunities, but their commitment has remained unwavering despite the absence of compensation. “It is very hard, but what can we do?” he said, highlighting the challenges they face.

During a recent visit, environment and tourism minister Indileni Daniel encouraged the volunteers to remain united and committed to their work.

She urged them to take pride in maintaining standards, even when faced with criticism. “Let people criticise you for doing your job right rather than for doing it wrong. When you see someone littering, speak up,” she said.

Daniel also called on management to implement a proper maintenance plan to ensure the longevity of the facility.

“All infrastructure has a lifespan. If something breaks, it must be fixed. I do not want to return in a few years and find everything falling apart,” she added.

Meanwhile, Director-General Ambassador Kaire Mbuende acknowledged the volunteers’ situation, stressing the importance of sustainable support.

He noted that mechanisms should be explored to ensure that volunteers are eventually compensated, as everyone needs a source of income to survive.
