The removal of illegally erected fences in the Ohangwena Region is gathering pace, with 22 structures already dismantled in the Okongo Constituency since the campaign began a month ago.

The exercise forms part of government efforts to curb illegal land occupation, promote equitable access to communal land, and ease escalating disputes in northern regions.

Deputy director in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform, Paulus Amaambo, revealed during the region’s annual performance review in Eenhana that the Regional Communal Land Board is currently assessing 97 additional suspected illegal fences, with decisions expected soon.

Amaambo stressed that all illegal structures will be removed once due process has been completed.

He explained that identified fence owners are formally notified and given an opportunity to dismantle them voluntarily. Failure to comply results in the regional land board intervening, removing the fences, recovering associated costs, and pursuing possible criminal charges.
