NamPower has issued an urgent flood warning after opening a second floodgate at the Ruacana Power Station, cautioning of significant downstream flooding along the Kunene River.

The power utility announced on Friday that rising water inflows from heavy rainfall in southern Angola have forced the opening of an additional flap gate at the Ruacana diversion weir.

River flow levels are now expected to exceed 1,800 cubic metres per second, up from the current release of about 1,450 cubic metres per second.

NamPower spokesperson Irene !Hoaes warned that the surge is likely to trigger severe flooding downstream of the power station.

Residents living along the Kunene River — particularly those in low-lying areas — have been urged to evacuate immediately and move livestock and equipment to higher ground.

She cautioned that water levels could rise rapidly and without warning.

River users, including lodges and campsites, have been advised to suspend activities near the water and take precautionary measures to ensure visitor safety.

“Residents and visitors are urged to keep away from the riverbanks and avoid all activities near the water,” !Hoaes said.

NamPower said it will continue to closely monitor the situation as inflows from Angola place increasing pressure on the Kunene River system.
