N$22m NHE project to deliver 34 new Walvis Bay homes
The National Housing Enterprise (NHE) officially broke ground on the construction of 34 houses in Walvia Bay's Meersig suburb under a N$22 million project expected to be completed within seven months.
The project is expected to commence on 23 March and is scheduled for completion by November.
The N$22 million project is expected to create about 80 jobs, contributing directly to local economic activity and skills development.
Thomas Shilongo, the NHE’s executive for infrastructure development, said the appointed contractors bear a significant responsibility.
“As NHE, we expect the highest levels of quality, safety and professionalism, as well as adherence to timelines, budget and project specifications," he said.
“Let us remember: delivering a house is not simply about brick and mortar; it is about dignity, investment security and trust,” he added.
Coastal housing backlog
Shilongo further highlighted that Walvis Bay remains a strategic urban centre in the national development framework.
He noted that the last major NHE development in the coastal town was completed in 2013, when 316 houses were built at a cost of N$53 million.
“Today, through this project and others, NHE is reaffirming its continued presence and recommitment to the town of Walvis Bay and its residents.”
By November 2025, NHE had made progress by handing over a separate site of 79 houses in Walvis Bay’s Kuisebmond Extension 8.
According to Shilongo, nearly 50% of those houses have already reached practical completion, with only electricity and water connections outstanding.
“This is tangible progress achieved through our multiple contractors or teams approach.”
With the addition of the 34 Meersig houses, NHE will be contributing over 100 houses in total towards the reduction of the national housing backlog in Walvis Bay.
Titus Shipulwa, one of the contractors, said they are committed to delivering the project with dedication and quality workmanship within the expected timeframes.
