“We cannot undo the tragedy of 17 October 2025,” acting prosecutor general Martha Imalwa said on Saturday, a year after Ondangwa control prosecutor Justine Shiweda was attacked outside her home.

“We cannot return Justine to those who loved her, but we can ensure that her memory remains alive in the conscience of our institution and that the principles for which she stood continue to guide our service to the nation,” she said.

Imalwa spoke at a remembrance gathering at Onambango village near Ondangwa in the Oshana region.

Addressing relatives and members of the prosecution fraternity, Imalwa paid tribute to Shiweda as a mother, daughter and dedicated officer of the court who served the Namibian people with courage and integrity.

Shiweda died from her injuries on 7 February, almost four months after the attack.

“Today, we remember not merely how she suffered, but how honourably she served,” Imalwa said.

Imalwa said Shiweda’s death remained a painful reminder of the dangers faced by those entrusted with upholding the rule of law, and urged prosecutors to honour her memory through continued dedication to their duties.

Imalwa expressed solidarity with Shiweda’s two children, her parents and her siblings.

Her office’s anniversary statement, however, did not specify what financial or educational assistance had been provided or was planned for the children, after the family last week raised concerns about unfulfilled support commitments.

Imalwa condemned violence and intimidation against prosecutors and other court officials, and said they must be able to carry out their duties without fear or interference.

The acting PG welcomed a national security task force established at President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s direction and chaired by chief justice Peter Shivute to strengthen the protection of judicial officers.

“Neither loss, nor hardship, nor intimidation shall diminish our resolve,” Imalwa said.
