Ewi - Ondangwa stadium project gains momentum

The Ondangwa Town Council is hard at work to ensure the completion of its multi-million dollar sports stadium, a project set to transform the face of sports in the northern regions.

The ambitious project, which aims to provide a state-of-the-art facility for various sporting codes, has recently received a major boost through several high-profile partnerships and infrastructure developments.

Speaking on the progress of the site, Ondangwa Town Council spokesperson Petrina Shitalangaho-Mutikisha confirmed that the project is moving forward steadily, despite minor hurdles.

“Overall, the Ondangwa Sports Stadium project is advancing steadily. This is made possible by the collaborative efforts between the Council and our key stakeholders. We are seeing visible progress across both the infrastructure and the facility development components,” Shitalangaho-Mutikisha said.

Financial Boost

The council’s efforts to fund the massive project received a significant lift after the Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust (NFCPT) stepped in with a financial contribution. The Trust donated N$300,000 specifically to support the stadium’s development.Financial Boost

According to the council, this donation is part of a broader strategy to involve stakeholders in accelerating the completion of the facility. Once finished, the stadium is expected to become a hub for youth empowerment and a magnet for investment in the town of Ondangwa.

Infrastructure Progress

In addition to the cash injection, the council has secured essential hardware to brighten up the arena. Power utility NamPower has provided high mast lights, which will be installed to ensure the facility can host events at night.

Accessibility to the stadium is also being addressed. The Road Fund Administration (RFA) is currently funding the construction of a bitumen (tarred) road leading directly to the stadium. Construction on the road began in January and is reportedly progressing well, ensuring that fans and athletes will have easy access to the venue once it opens its gates.

Lawn Challenges

While the structural work is moving at a good pace, Shitalangaho-Mutikisha noted that the installation of the playing surface has faced some natural obstacles. The process of laying the lawn has experienced minor delays.

“Work on the installation of the lawn has experienced minor delays due to challenges such as heavy rainfall and the constant need to remove natural weeds. However, this component remains ongoing and continues to move forward,” she explained.

The Ondangwa Town Council remains committed to delivering a "top-of-the-range" facility. The stadium is not just seen as a place for football, but as a multi-purpose complex that will serve the community and help discover the next generation of Namibian sporting stars.

With the support of the RFA, NamPower, and the NFCPT, the council is confident that the stadium will soon become a landmark of development in the north.
