The National Housing Enterprise (NHE) on Monday handed over a portion of land in Eenhana in the Ohangwena region, where 100 houses for low-income families will be built.

The houses are expected to be completed by the end of June.

The project marks the NHE’s return to the region after a decade-long hiatus. A similar initiative previously saw the construction of 284 houses at a cost of N$80 million.

NHE manager for infrastructure development, Indileni Set-Sam Iipinge, said the N$7.4 million first phase is a direct intervention aimed at those most in need.

"This initiative is not just another project on our books, it is a direct response to the housing demand for low-income earners, the very citizens who need affordable shelter the most," Iipinge said.

The development is designed to accommodate different family sizes and will include a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom houses.

Restoring dignity

Iipinge said the project is expected to create about 100 jobs, providing much-needed income and skills development for residents of Eenhana.

He added that the project is about more than construction statistics, describing it as an effort to restore the dignity of Namibian families.

"Housing is far more than brick and mortar. It is about hope, stability, community and opportunity," he said.

"It is about giving a child a safe place to dream, a parent a place to build a future and a nation the foundations for prosperity.”

Iipinge urged the joint-venture contractors to prioritise social responsibility alongside technical excellence.

He said the groundbreaking aligns with the government’s Sixth National Development Plan (NDP6), which calls for an accelerated and innovative approach to infrastructure development.
