Zim embassy says all is well in Harare
The Embassy of the Republic of Zimbabwe in Windhoek has released a statement in which it said that all military personnel will be off the streets of the country's capital and surrounding areas today. According to a statement issued this morning, the country's defence force had "intervened to address recent political developments". The embassy said they were informed that the military action was a "surgical" one, set to remove criminal elements and hand them over to the police. According to the state publication the Herald, these ministers
are the leading figures of the so-called G40 faction in the ruling Zanu-PF‚ led by First Lady Grace Mugabe. They allegedly include higher education minister Jonathan Moyo‚ local government minister Saviour Kasukuwere and finance minister Ignatius Chombo.
The embassy said that President Robert Mugabe remains the head of state and his government "remains in office".
The civil service, parliament and judiciary have been asked to perform their functions as usual, the statement read.
"Security personnel are under strict instruction not to harm anyone," the statement said in closure.
